Do I need Xero or any accounting software?

No. SlipStack works perfectly without any accounting software. Receipts you send on WhatsApp are filed to your own Google Drive and tallied in a live Google Sheet cost dashboard. If you ever start using Xero, you can switch posting on later.

Where is my expense data kept?

In your own Google account. Every receipt is filed to your Google Drive as a photo and PDF, and your running totals live in a Google Sheet you own — open it on your phone or share it with your accountant any time.
